Living for a Sunny Day- Planning a Wedding with SunTrust

We need to learn how to save not only for rainy days, but for those special Sunny Days. Like a wedding :) Everyone knows that it is hard to save money. Especially when everything is so outrageously expensive. But planning something like a wedding does not have to be expensive.

That's where SunTrust comes in. No matter how you envision your day, SunTrust wants to support you and your adventure. SunTrust wants to inspire and motivate you with the tips, advice and tools you need to save for that Sunny Day. SunTrust wants you to enjoy your Sunny Day without worrying about money.

When my husband and I got married. We planned our wedding within a week. We got married exactly one year later from the date we started dating. We wanted to get married but at the time we were also expecting. So, we decided that we needed to save money for the babies needs.
We got married in Newport, RI on a lovely beach. In February. Yes, February! We hired a Justice of the Peace and it turns out that his wife was a photographer.
Our whole wedding, including hotel, tux, dress, shoes, Justice of the Peace, photographer and our wedding photos cost less than $1200. I know its exciting to have all of your family members and friends together and have a gigantic wedding, but it's not what we wanted. Instead, we had a quiet, romantic wedding. Right on the beach. With only 6 people present. It was far beyond perfect.

Seven Tips for Saving Money While Planning a Wedding

  1. If you are crafty, make your own decorations and invitations. When choosing invitations, or making them, avoid heavy, oversized invitations. This will help you save on postage costs. Get family and friends involved when putting together favors, invitations and decorations.
  2. Make your own cake or have a family member make one. Even getting a cake at a grocery store bakery is okay. Their cakes are just as good.
  3. Make your own flower bouquets. It's simple to wrap a few Gerber Daisy stems together with some pretty ribbon or twine.
  4. Try to book your wedding venue on a weekday. Try to avoid the weekends. (Venues jack up the price). Also try to book your wedding way in advance. Venues tend to charge more when booked last minute.
  5. Have your wedding during off season. During the spring and summer months, everything is much more expensive. Consider a non-traditional wedding. Instead of a venue, get married on the beach, in a friends backyard, or a local flower garden.
  6. Instead of having a sit down dinner, have your dinner served buffet style. This will save on costs for additional servants. It's also cheaper to have a daytime reception.
  7. Alcohol is one of the biggest expenses. Venues will charge you for every open bottle. Even if that bottle was used for one drink. Consider offering a limited bar. Don't serve every kind of alcohol. Instead, serve a signature cocktail that uses only one kind of liquor. Or, just serve beer, wine and champagne for toasts. Stop serving anything alcoholic 1 hour prior to the end of your party. That way it'll save money and it's a great idea for your guests safety.
